CFP Season Survival Guide for Solo Builders

No team to bounce ideas off, no time to babysit a spreadsheet of deadlines. Here's how to actually get submissions out the door during CFP season.

CFP season doesn't care that you're a team of one.

Deadlines for six conferences land in the same two weeks. Everyone else has a team member drafting abstracts while they build. You have you—between shipping, customer emails, and the thing that's on fire today.

Most solo builders don't lose CFP season to bad ideas. They lose it to no time to write them down properly.

Track deadlines somewhere that isn't your memory

Sounds obvious. Isn't. Half the CFPs that pass you by aren't ones you decided to skip—they're ones you meant to get to and forgot existed. One list, dates and links, checked weekly. That's the whole system. It doesn't need to be fancier than that.

Capture the idea the second it shows up

The best talk pitch of your year will hit you at a bad time—mid-deploy, on a walk, half-listening to a podcast. You will not remember it at your desk later with the same edge it had in the moment.

Say it out loud immediately. The version you capture in the moment is almost always sharper than the version you'd write from memory an hour later trying to reconstruct the feeling.

Batch the writing, not the thinking

Let ideas land whenever they land, all week. Then set one block—thirty minutes—to turn your captured thoughts into actual abstracts. Don't try to think and write CFP copy in the same sitting you're also debugging something.

You already do the interesting work. The only thing standing between that and a stage is getting it down before the deadline and the doubt both catch up with you. Capture fast, write on your schedule, submit before you talk yourself out of it.
